Introduction
The Institute of Development
and Strategic Studies - School of
Development Studies (IDSS-Philippines) is a registered non-stock,
non-profit academic and alternative learning institution for
development studies in the Philippines. The Securities and Exchange
Commission (SEC) approved its legal status on March 30, 2004.
The Institute was licensed and recognized by the Department of
Education
(DepEd) as of June 20, 2005 and accredited by the Fund Aid for Private
Education (FAPE) as of July 25, 2004. The early government recognition
and accreditation are the results of effectiveness in teaching
strategies
which surpassed “quality indicators” set by the Philippine government.
As an alternative academic institution, the Institute generates
strategies and various methodologies for making education accessible to
the poorest and marginalized segments of society. The majority of the
students from the Institute are deprived individuals from isolated and
mountain communities
who
cannot afford public or
private education.
The Institute is aware and conscious that education is an effective
instrument in human emancipation and transformation of individuals. It
therefore exists strategically in one of the remotest part of the
Philippines in order to cater for the educational needs of those who do
not
have the access to quality education.
The Institute is not only an academic institution, but also an active
player in protection and rehabilitation of sexually, physically and
emotionally abused children and youth. The Institute has played
a significant role in crafting various public policies related to child
and youth welfare code, sustainable and organic farming, environmental
protection and rehabilitation and food security.
The Institute take its inspiration from its humble beginning and
experiences: from house churches in the mountains to farmers’ classes,
collective planning of farmers to provide water to their farmlands and
their struggle to break away from the bondage of poverty and seclusion.
